If you watched the Super Bowl on Sunday night, you saw an array of creative, humorous and well-done television commercials, some featuring famous celebrities. The going rate for each thirty second commercial was seven million dollars!!!
I thought that the two most powerful commercials were from the faith based “He Gets Us” organization. Their first commercial pictured children helping, caring and loving each other with the message, “Jesus didn’t want us to act like adults.”
Their second longer commercial showed images of hostility where neighbors were screaming and attacking each other. “Jesus loved the people we hate.”
On Monday, I wanted to learn more about the “He Gets Us” organization. I went to their website where they described their work as saying, “…we’re not “left” or “right” or a political organization of any kind. We’re also not affiliated with any particular church or denomination. We simply want everyone to understand the authentic Jesus as he’s depicted in the Bible — the Jesus of radical forgiveness, compassion, and love.”
The more I searched their materials, I discovered that they have a definite understanding of Jesus. Some of their writings suggest that if we want faith, we need to believe the right things. We need to know Jesus as they do.
While I disagree that we all must see Jesus in the same way, I thought their commercials were excellent and made it clear that faith is all about loving God and loving our neighbor—exactly what Jesus did.
