Position: Choir Director
Status: Part-time / Non-Exempt, Hourly 
Reports to: Senior Pastor and SPRC

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Monona United Methodist Church (MUMC) is a congregation based in Monona, Wisconsin. We are proud to be a diverse, inclusive community with an active presence in our city. MUMC is a proud member of the Wisconsin Annual Conference in the United Methodist Church and maintains strong ties with other affirming churches in the Madison community and beyond. The position of Choir Director will be central to our 10 am Sunday worship service, especially as we move toward a weekly livestream in addition to live services. The Choir Director will be responsible for directing the choir in a four-time per month schedule as decided upon with the Senior Pastor.

Qualifications:

  • Associate or Bachelor’s Degree in Music or relevant experience
  • Ability to sing and demonstrate hymns with vocal clarity. The ability to accompany on an instrument such as piano or guitar is not required but encouraged
  • Ability to conduct with clarity
  • Ability to lead worship independently or collaboratively with other musicians
  • Basic understanding of music theory to communicate with choir members
  • Ability to help others learn music as needed in possible section rehearsals
  • Experience leading worship services either as a soloist, instrumentalist, or ensemble member
  • Able to communicate with large and small groups of people
  • Must exhibit servant leadership, humility, cooperation, ability to communicate, time management, organizational and people skills

Responsibilities:

  • Lead authentic, engaging worship which includes several musical styles suitable for congregational singing.
  • Conduct the Adult Choir four times per month during the September-June season. 
  • Offer special music with Staff Singer when the choir does not perform. 
  • Additional summer choir Sundays may be added upon mutual decision with the Senior Pastor, Staff Singer and Church Organist.
  • Communicate with the Senior Pastor and Organist before weekly services to coordinate music and ensure they have access to all pieces before Sunday.
  • Set annual goals for the worship ministry that are in line with MUMC’s vision and then evaluate how those goals were attained or modified during the year.
  • Lead weekly rehearsals on Sunday before service for 30-45 minutes
  • Create a plan to recruit new choirs members to help grow choral membership
  • Provide resources to aid choir members in practicing music outside of Sunday morning rehearsal
  • Attend Staff Meetings on occasion as requested by the Pastor
  • In case of a need for a substitute, the Choir Director  will be responsible for providing a qualified individual to assist in that role except in case of an emergency.

Weekly Time Expectations:

Sunday Worship Service 2 hours (includes Rehearsal)
Individual Prep Time 1-2 hours are allotted (additional time may be requested on a case-by-case basis)
Non-Sunday hours are flexible 
Sundays off per year
Average weekly total up to 5 hours

This position is accountable to the Senior Pastor. This is an hourly role with a starting rate of $25 per hour subject to regular pay raises upon review.
